What we do
- Investigate complaints and concerns about alleged procedural irregularities and administrative improprieties.
- Help ensure procedural fairness in decision-making,
- Provide general advice and guidance about University policies, and procedures.
- Provide advice on what processes to follow
- Refer enquiries and complaints to relevant university administrators or offices that may be better suited to deal with the problem.
- Facilitate resolution of disputes through various alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods.
- Recommend changes to university policies and procedures.
- Identify systemic issues and make recommendations for systemic change.
- Provide training and educational tools.
What we don't do
- Adjudicate, impose remedies or sanctions, or change and enforce University rules and policies.
- Make binding orders or decisions,
- Intervene in matters of academic judgment,
- Intervene in matters that should have been brought to, were considered or are pending by an academic appeal process.
- Intervene in matters that could be the subject of a grievance procedure under a collective agreement.
- Advocate for any member of the UKZN community nor represent University Management.
- Testify in formal proceedings.
- Keep official records.
- Accept legal notice on behalf of the University.
